I’ve never enjoyed the confines of clothing and the restrictions it puts on our bodies. I can remember being a toddler and running around the house naked as a jay bird. My parents thought it was cute enough to snap a few Polaroids of me too. I still feel cute running round naked. My sister used to tell on me and say she saw me flip around in the bed and on top of the covers naked. I didn’t care though because being naked felt good to me and made me happy. As I began to grow up and learn more about nudity, the more I began to realize why being naked is healthy for you.

Outside Research

According to an informational post on Cosmopolitan, there are six reasons why you should sleep naked, particularly as a woman. These go beyond the “I feel sexier”, “sex is easier”, and “builds a closer relationship” reasons, and touch on the medical and scientific reasons of why you should.

Air Out

Tight, vag-hugging undies can be a warm, moist breeding ground for the bacteria that causes infections, and letting your vagina air out overnight by sleeping naked can help keep you healthy and clean. As Nicole Prause, an Associate Research Scientist at the University of California Los Angeles, told Medical Daily, sleeping naked reduces the ability of those bacteria to “overwhelm the normal healthy vaginal flora.”

You’re Cooler

We’re not just talking your coolness factor among your friends and family, but sleeping cooler temps is good for your body and health. Studies have shown that sleeping in cooler rooms helps you sleep better, so maybe save the cute flannel PJs with scottie dogs on them for pre-bed lounging instead of actual sleep. “Your body temp progressively declines as you sleep, which is a natural tendency of the body, so being too warm with heavy PJs and blankets can disrupt that,” said Lisa Shives, MD, from the National Sleep Foundation’s board of directors. Sleeping naked is like ditching a blanket and keeping your body a bit cooler. Therefore, cooler body equals better beauty sleep.

Provides Melatonin and Growth Hormones

Aside from making you toss and turn all night, being too warm at night also disrupts the release of melatonin and growth hormone — the two main anti-aging hormones. “As your body temperature drops, growth hormone is released and works its regenerative magic,” Natasha Turner, author of The Hormone Diet, said. That “regenerative magic” is basically what keeps your skin youthful and hair luminous, all just from sleeping in your ~birthday suit~.

Reduced Stress

We live very stressful lives with a lot of responsibilities to keep up with. Most of us have jobs, families, volunteering, and kids activities to manage. This constant barrage of stressors can affect our sleeping habits resulting in an increase of the stress hormone cortisol. Adding the stressors of life on top of all the sweaty interruptions from wearing pajamas, your cortisol levels may not decrease as much as needed while you sleep. Allowing cortisol levels to get too high is what causes us to crave unhealthy food!

Helps With Weight

When you sleep better anti-aging and human growth hormones are released into your body. During sleep, your body naturally produces an appetite suppressor, leptin, while reducing the appetite stimulant ghrelin. The longer you sleep, the less likely you are to feel hungry while sleeping. If you have interrupted sleep, then you may get those midnight cravings we all loath.

Your Sex Life Will Improve

Sleeping naked with your partner provides a lot of benefits. Not only do you have easy access to each others bodies, but skin-skin contact helps produce feel-good chemicals like oxytocin. Sleeping naked improves intimacy with your partner and can greatly improve your sexual satisfaction and put you “in the mood” more often. I can certainly agree with this claim. Also, when you are naked more often in front of your partner, you begin to crave them more. Plus getting hugs during the day are so much sweeter when you are skin-to-skin.

Boosts Your Immune System

In a time when sickness is going around and there are different strings of COVID and influenza, any boost to your immune system should be welcome. Getting a better nights rest helps boost your immune system to help fight off these infections. Being properly rested could be the difference in catching the latest sickness or not being sick as long. You owe it to yourself to try it. What do you have to lose?

Personal Experiences

A couple of years ago I wrote a post about How Being a Nudist Affected My Mental Health. This writing came about in the middle of my separation and divorce when I needed it most. This is not always easy if you live with someone or have a family who aren’t really comfortable with nudity. The first step is to be open and vulnerable with them. This is especially true if you live with a spouse or partner. More often than not it’s harder for women than men to stroll around naked. Don’t let that stop you ladies.

Builds Confidence

The first thing I noticed why being naked is healthy for you is confidence. We all have imperfections about our bodies. It’s a fact of life. I encourage you to read my What is Beauty post. It will give you some insight why we feel the way we do about ourselves. Beauty is a state of mind and how we feel about ourselves. Beauty is very subjective and it’s not what others portray. The more time I spend naked, the better I feel about myself. The single best action you can take is visiting a clothing optional resort or beach. There you will find people from all walks of life with different body types and shapes. You realize were all the same and not models on social media.

Builds Intimacy

It is much easier to Establish Intimacy and Connections Through Nudity with yourself and your partner. Intimacy is not just about sexual intimacy or having sex. Intimacy with your partner goes much deeper than sex. You can also have emotional and psychological intimacy. These are the levels of intimacy I crave the most. After years of feeling along emotionally, having emotional intimacy drives my very soul. An increase of emotional intimacy has led to a much greater physical intimacy. As a result, my desire for physical intimacy has increased exponentially.

Improves Your Mood

How many of you have gotten out of the shower and just laid on the bed? How did that make you feel? Relaxed I hope. I know it helps me to relax. The moment I am able to relax I start to feel my mood change and the stress of the day melts away. With my anxiety, reducing my stress is probably the single most effective reason why being naked is healthy for me. When my stress levels get too high, then everyone can sense it and it can sometimes be projected onto others. This is something I don’t want and will not tolerate. Stress works it’s way in and brings negativity with it.

Final Thoughts

Many people in society, including our families, will will tell you that being naked is a bad thing. My heart aches when I hear stories of men and women who don’t even like to shower naked. I cannot imagine feeling that much shame over my body. To this day, there are primitive tribes who roam their lands completely naked, without shame. These tribes choose not to adapt to modern society and cherish their history and heritage. I’m sure most of this goes back to the spread of organized religion, but that is a topic for another day.

Take some time to do a little bit of research yourself and learn how being naked is healthy for you. With an open heart and open mind I’m certain you will truly appreciate the benefits. If you are unable to spend time naked at home, then find spot in nature where you can give your body the freedom it deserves. Another great option is searching for a club or resort to visit that supports nudity or is clothing optional. You won’t be disappointed.

Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of blind faith.
